John murugaselvam (basically a criminologist) qualified in special education for mentally retarded at national institute for the mentally handicapped at secunderabad, andrapradesh in 1998.during 90s he joined in university of madras and acquired qualification in education, linguistics and school management. In 1991 he did his senior diploma in teaching the deaf at little flower convent, provided by government of tamilnadu.Later he joined in RASA and completed the PG diploma in creative movement education.
In 1998 he was invited to Genesis school in Singapore to get hands on training in Remedial education for Children with specific learning disabilities and autism. Then he was invited to srilanka by lion's club to establish a special school for Tamil speaking children. In Colombo, he gave one year special education training to 30 untrained teachers. he conducted special camps. In Kandy and trincomalee to provide counseling and training to the parents of special children.
His first book ("mentally retardation") was published in 1992.He and his wife Joyce blessing (also a special educator) wrote 15 boos on various development disabilities including "autism" (published in 1994). They received 3 times award from government of tamilnadu in addition he developed an assessment checklist for developmentally disabled ("adaptive behavioral checklist for developmentally disabled"ABC-DD) which is a computer aided assessment scale. This scale is available in English, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Sinhalese. He developed "Functional Assessment ChecklisT-FACT, screening test for specific learning disability" and "play checklist for children with autism".
He established academy of special education and habilitation training and provide many services like "e-rem.ed"-a computer aided remedial education centre ,"Rejoice"-weekend day care center for children with autism (one year diploma in training the children eith autism is provided here),"Bedestha"-open school for children with learning problems,"karunya"- itinerant service for children with special needs. Presently he is working as a lecturer in special education at V-excel academy for teacher excellence, lecturer in speech and language at Rangammal memorial teacher training school for the hearing impaired and consultant in Theatre for holistic development at Rasa Special School.
